All this to get a 99.93% throughput and ~20ms GC duration (the OTEL part is optional, I just wanted an easy way to visualize things).

I ♥ how responsive CachyOS is and I ♥ the new concrete slabs and stairs.

Over and out!

I wanted to summarize all that's going on my head in a single post, but seems that's going to be beyond my skill. I wanted to say I miss my former life in technology and I wanted to say that whatever is going on, we had it coming. I cannot generalize, but I think of many examples that remind me on how we built a circle of entitlement similar to that around finance. Except a big part of our job can actually be automated and has zero connection to social sentiment. Mistakes are still expensive though. Anyway, I am just glad I had my reality check when I joined and left big tech. I am grateful for the opportunity of being around smarter, better skilled, better spoken people and I wish I had contributed far more to society rather than to a product that wears its fabric. I am glad this AI movement is happening, not because of what it promises or the risk it poses, but because it humbles many of us and forces us to look into our own humanity. It sucks it is also helping some crooks funnel resources out of society, but, is that something new? Well, maybe the scale.

This current wave will not deliver much, but it is delivering a reality check to many people in the IT industry (together with a lot of misfortune), but I can only hope things will improve from here once we accept a middle ground was long due.

Everytime I visit someone else's site in here, I jump straight to the sources. I assume that I enjoy seeing what goes behind the final product, but I am also curious on how people solves a problem or deals with an idea. This site is not different. I think I enjoy far more creating what's under the hood, because I want my visitors to have a simple experience, where nothing that's not necessary is present. That includes external sources, tracking or any other artifact that adds no value.

Is this crazy obsessive? You bet! But here, I want no single indentation to be out of place (yes, I have written a lot of Python), and every byte you are served to your browser has not been written, generated or copied without a thorough review and most important (to me), it was put together maybe not flawlessly, but with intention.

A week is gone now and I am enjoying this. There is some odd calm in doing things manually. I could automate this site like before and just focus on the content, but the content is the difficult part. Instead, I am choosing to wrangle with tags, files, formats and even thinking about the nuances of data aging. I find joy on this vestigial approach, where content has a first row seat, where we don't build for monetizing, but for sharing.

Anyway, first week is gone now and miracously there is only one rant in my feed. XD

One of the weirdness of my retirement is that there is no distinction between weekdays and weekends. There are just easy days (long and boring) and busy days.

In my endless leisure time, today I decided to do some back of the napkin math about the economic conditions of the place I live in and concluded that under the current employment stats and conditions, lack of education and freebies disguised as social help (in replacement for real safety nets), this country has about 7 years before it is hit with a reality check... Assuming AI adoption and human replacement in the industry accelerates (and it will), that number could drop to 5 years. Back of the napkin math ignores a lot of variables that are actually impactful, but it is a dire forecast nevertheless.

The older I get the more relevant becomes simplicity and accessibility to me. It is only when I started measuring my work against real standards that I found that I could do better. I wish this was covered during my education, because disabilities rarely (if ever) get a seat when preparing products and the people who will build these products.

Always finding a justification for incompetence is the most triggering trait I have ever known. It goes toe-to-toe with greed and ignorance.

I am terribly grateful for the opportunity I had to contribute to different IT companies as an engineer. Having said that, I don't understand how someone helping build an addictive advertising machine is worth half a million a year while they contribute absolutely nothing back to society. Shut down a social network tonight and tomorrow the world is still standing like nothing ever changed. I don't get how or why educators, farmers, health workers, constructors, just to mention some are undervalued almost as if they were expendable.

I don't understand why frontier labs still exist after stealing all the knowledge humans have produced and shared. I remember a couple decades back, P2P and music sharing inspired a witch hunt by many industries, yet today nobody seems to find it a big offense. Even worse, after all that pillage, their "intelligence" has solved or created nothing of relevance.

This post's intention is not to criticize the technology; I really like querying local and private LLMs for knowledge, I enjoy building machine learning models and using AI for sorting or reviewing data. As with any other technology, these tools are valuable, but the hype is not. It is disgusting.

I am coming back to the only place I find entertaining and worth spending my time.

With the years and the non-stop back and forth this world has experienced for the past decade, I wake up everyday longing for a quiet place, where no humming, no tracking, no ads, no infinite feed of complacent people and their optimism around the status quo and lately no slop.

I have no social presence and no desire for joining. All I wanted was some calm, so here I am again. On a fresh start.
